Angoram District to host 1st SEPIK RIVER WOMEN'S CANOE RACE at Angoram Station on June 29th to 30th 2019. The theme of the race is "Lukautim Sepik Wara - Bai Sepik Wara Lukautim Yumi" .

This event is an initiative by the Sepik River People to raise awareness and campaign to Protect Sepik River, the only source of livelihood for the Sepik River People. Due to pollution threat from continuous logging and mining activities in the Sepik River basin, People are taking actions now to protect their only source of survival. For the Sepik River People, the river itself is non-negotiable and it is life to the people. People believe that there must be always a sustain balance of life for them. People, culture and environment depend on each other. The River has been sustaining the Sepik people for generations. Now that it is at risk to be polluted by the massive Frieda mine project, Sepik River People are uniting together to call for a total BAN to Frieda mine project.





About 300 Sepik River women participation will take part in this two days event. Women from all the 5 LLGs in Angoram will take part with only one purpose, that is to play, unite together, and voice out as one People to BAN FRIEDA MINE PROJECT.
The prices for the Canoe Race placings are;
Singles Race
First place - K2000.00
Second place - K1700.00
Third place - K1300.00
Fourth place - K1000.00





Doubles race
First place - K3000.00
Second place - K2500.00
Third place - K1500.00
Fourth place - K1200.00





Registration fee for each woman's participation is K50.00. Registration opened on June 1st and will be closed on June 28th.





First formal meeting for the organizing committees and the Angoram people on June 1st, a total of 400 plus People gathered at Angoram market for the meeting.
Angoram People are excited about the Women's Canoe Race event and pledged in their support for the event, and support for the call to BAN FRIEDA MINE AND PROTECT SEPIK RIVER.
