The polio vaccination campaign has come to an
end this month, but surveillance system will still operate till the end
of the year.
WHO Country Representative Dr. Luo Dapeng says
the past 12 months of the polio outbreak response has become a testament
to PNGs commitment to an enduring legacy of good health to its
children.
Dr. Dapeng described the campaign as the “most
ambitious, most expensive, and most challenging vaccination campaign in
the history of the country” and encourages PNG to sustain the momentum.
The campaign mobilized more than 12 000 health workers and volunteers
who were trained as vaccinators, surveillance officers and mobilizers.
Since the vaccination campaign began in June last year, a total of 3
million children have been vaccinated against the polio virus.
With the inclusion of measles – rubella immunization this year, PNG
vaccinated more than 1 million children under 5 years old nationwide and
the campaign was completed in mid – July this year.
