Minister for National Planning and Monitoring Richard Maru says the National Statistical Office (NSO) must look at ways minimize costs for census 2020.

Maru says in the last census the government flew in all the trained people from Port Moresby to all the provinces and districts to conduct the census which have cost a lot of money.

His direction to the National Statistician and his team is to minimize costs by using those in the districts to be responsible for the elections in the districts.

He says they are paying for ward councilors and ward recorders. It is because these people know more about their own people and places adding that rather than sending people from Port Moresby over they should be training the councilors, ward recorders and the people in the districts to do the census.

Maru says the last LLG elections; the government got costing from electoral commission of K400 million to run the elections and K30 million was released.

He says NSO must be responsible and look at ways that can minimize unnecessary costs using local people.
